Goal Setting That Actually Works
Why most goals fail before February — and the four rules that separate goals you finish from goals you write down.
Goal Setting That Actually Works
Most goals fail before February. Not because people are lazy — because the goals were poorly designed.
Here are the four rules that actually work.
Rule 1: Only set goals you can do, not goals that depend on outcomes
“Lose 10 pounds” is an outcome. It depends on genetics, hormones, and luck. “Run three times a week and cook dinner five nights a week” is a doable goal. You either did it or you didn’t.
Doable goals compound. Outcome goals frustrate.
Rule 2: Cap it at three
More than three simultaneous goals and none of them will win. Pick the three that would meaningfully improve your year, and let the rest wait.
Rule 3: Tie each goal to a weekly ritual
Every goal needs a repeating time slot. If it doesn’t appear in your week, it doesn’t exist.
- Fitness goal → Tue/Thu/Sat workouts at 6am. Use the Fitness Goal Planner.
- Savings goal → auto-transfer every payday. Structure it with the Savings Goal Planner.
- Career goal → 30 minutes every weekday morning. Plan the week with the Daily Productivity Planner.
Rule 4: Review monthly, not “when you remember”
On the first Sunday of every month, spend 20 minutes reviewing each goal. Two questions: am I on track? and is this still what I want? Adjust the plan or the goal. Don’t just push through with a goal that’s no longer relevant.
Why most people skip these
- Rule 1 requires giving up the outcome fantasy.
- Rule 2 requires saying no to good goals.
- Rule 3 requires opening your calendar.
- Rule 4 requires being honest about progress.
Each is small on its own. Together, they’re the reason some people finish two big things a year and others start twelve and finish none.
The one-page setup
On a single page, for each of your three goals, write:
- The doable action (verb + frequency).
- The weekly time slot when it happens.
- The monthly review date.
That’s it. Save it somewhere you look weekly. Update once a month. In 12 months you’ll have done three meaningful things instead of started ten.
