Preparing for Interviews with AI Assistance
A practical, 7-day interview prep plan using AI — without letting AI make you sound like everyone else.
Preparing for Interviews with AI Assistance
Interview prep changed the day AI got good at role-playing. Here’s a 7-day plan that uses AI as a sparring partner — without letting it homogenize how you sound.
Day 1: Deconstruct the job
Paste the job description into an AI. Ask for the top 5 skills the role is really testing, in order of priority. Also ask what a common weak candidate would say that’s wrong.
Day 2: Map your stories
List 4–6 real professional stories you can tell in under 90 seconds. Each should have: situation, action, outcome. Match each story to at least one of the top 5 skills from Day 1.
Our Interview Preparation workflow walks you through this mapping and helps identify gaps.
Day 3: Rehearse the tough questions
Ask AI to interview you — not just softball questions, but the real ones: “Tell me about a time you failed,” “Why did you leave your last role,” “What’s a decision your manager would disagree with?”
Type out real answers. Then ask the AI to critique them like a hiring manager would.
Day 4: Research the company
Beyond the About page. What are they hiring for? What are their public priorities? Who are their competitors? What’s changed in the last 6 months?
Goal: walk in with 3–4 informed questions and 1–2 opinions.
Day 5: Role-play the actual conversation
Have AI simulate the whole 45-minute conversation as the hiring manager. Answer out loud. Have it push back. Record if you can.
This is the single most valuable exercise — and it’s the one most candidates skip.
Day 6: Prepare your questions
Interviews are a two-way conversation. Prepare 5–6 questions that show you’ve thought about the role, the team, and how you’d succeed there. Never ask anything you could have googled.
Day 7: Rest and shorten
Day before: don’t cram. Reread your resume, your stories, and your questions. Get sleep. Show up early. That’s it.
The one thing AI can’t do for you
Bring your judgment, your voice, and your specific memory of the work you’ve actually done. AI can help you prepare, structure, and rehearse — but the interviewer is buying you, not a well-prepared script.
With a good resume from the Resume Builder, a specific Cover Letter, and this 7-day prep loop, you’ll walk in as prepared as any candidate they’ve ever seen — without sounding like any of them.
